I think the best category for Aronofsky is atheist, not ambiguous. The first quote is definitely an atheist quote, but I don't think the second indicates any change in stance. The second quote basically boils down to him saying that we're all of the same matter and energy, so we're connected and that has implications towards how we should treat each other and the environment. He says that some people might calls this connection holy or God, but he does not himself state that and, I believe, indicates that he himself wouldn't use those terms, since he says "some people." Many atheists believe that we're all connected and I guess I don't see why that should exclude him. If you define God as the sun, then even I am a believer.
