Kaminer spoke at a 1995 conference on rationality: "Americans have become fascinated by angels and 'out of body' experiences and seem to be discarding the habit of critical thinking. It is in this environment that irrational ideas take hold. They tell us, for instance, that there is no death, only 'energy transformation,' and that science, born out of speculation, cannot help us understand the spiritual world.
"The dissemination of pseudoscience, including such things as the fascination with near-death experiences and the growing belief by Americans -- 34 percent of them -- in reincarnation are dangerous. They help to break down the standards of reason."

Kaminer's article "The Last Taboo" appears as the cover story in the October 14, 1996 issue of the New Republic in which she says that what America needs is not more religiosity or spirituality but more atheism. The article can also be found on the Positive Atheism web site at http://www.positiveatheism.org/writ/kaminer.htm.
