From an interview in Photographer's Forum conducted by Ken Lassiter:

KL: Sometimes the words, "compassion, empathy, humanity, dignity and tenderness," are used to describe your photographs. Is this how you feel about the people.

SS: People sometimes ask if I am a religious person. I am not a religious person. I don't believe in God, that there is only one superior who directs all things in the universe. No, I believe there is one kind of god that is in men -- the human god.
