Noted British barrister, author, and playwright, who is probably most famous for his creation of the character, the fictional barrister, Horace Rumpole.
In his memoir, Murderers and Other Friends: Another Part of Life (London: Viking, 1994) Mortimer describes himself as an "atheist for Christ." In the last chapter of this book he outlines his views on religion presenting himself as an unbeliever who is very much sympathetic to the ethical and cultural aspects of Christianity.
